Purpose: Direct assessment of written language
Age: 8 through to18+yrs
Admin: Group/Individual
Time: 1 hour
Description
The WLA offers direct assessment of written language through an evaluation of writing samples that reflect three models of discourse: expressive, instructive, and creative writing. Analytic scoring techniques are used to yield scores in General Writing Ability, Productivity, Word Complexity, and Readability, as well as a Written Language Quotient that is a composite of the four subscores.
Administration and Scoring
The WLA can be administered to groups of students in the classroom or to an individual in a clinical setting in an hour or less. In each of three separate sessions, students are given one of the three Writing Record Forms, each containing a writing prompt and space for the composition. Although the test is not timed, 15-20 minutes should be allowed for students to complete each writing task. Scoring involves rating specific features of the samples as well as counting words, sentences, and syllables. Each students writing sample can be scored in approximately 15 minutes.
