Casebook of Sexual Offending

by D. Richard Laws & Carmen L. Z. Gress

Purpose: A Practice Manual for Diagnosis, Risk Management, and Treatment Planning

This manual was specifically designed for use with the Risk for Sexual Violence Protocol (RSVP) (Hart et al., 2003), a risk management guide. You will find, however, that it may be used with other risk assessment tools such as the Static-99 (Hanson & Thornton, 1999), the Minnesota Sex Offender Screening Tool-R (MsSOST-R )(Epperson et al., 2000), the Sex Offender Risk Assessment Guide (SORAG) (Quinsey, Harris, Rice, & Cormier, 1998), the Sexual Violence Risk-20 (SVR-20) (Boer, Hart, Kropp, & Webster, 1997), or a community management guide for assessing change in risk levels such as the Sex Offender Need Assessment Rating (SONAR) (Hanson & Harris, 2000). The information herein is probably too limited to successfully complete a Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) (Hare, 1991). On the other hand, for a general assessment of violence risk, there is probably sufficient information to complete the HCR-20 (Webster, Douglas, Eaves, & Hart, 1997)

The manual may also be used for practice in treatment planning. Evaluators often make recommendations in their reports that the client should work on cognitive distortions, deviant sexual arousal , fantasy control, empathy deficits and so on without making further specifications. In reviewing the cases in the manual it would be useful to develop a detailed treatment plan for the individual described in each section.
