Kaligo - A.I. Powered Literacy App

A generic image

Kaligo is a comprehensive digital learning and handwriting intervention tool designed for classroom use in the UK context, supporting both students with additional needs, including those with dysgraphie, and mainstream learners. It fits naturally into inclusive classrooms, enabling teachers to differentiate instruction without increasing workload.

At its core, Kaligo develops handwriting as a graphomotor skill (fine motor control, movement planning, directionality, fluency and letter formation). The programme follows a structured progression: students begin with pressure control activities, move on to fundamental pre-writing shapes (vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines, zigzags), then progress to more complex patterns such as loops and bridges, which underpin fluent letter formation. Finger gym videos support fine motor preparation and readiness for writing. This structured pathway then leads into handwriting tasks (letters, syllables and words), ensuring transfer into functional writing.

Kaligo also includes a full literacy suite, covering phonics, spelling and reading, supporting the development of phonological awareness, grapheme–phoneme correspondence, early spelling skills and reading fluency.

A key strength of Kaligo lies in its instant feedback system, designed to prevent error consolidation and support real-time learning. Students receive immediate visual analysis of their writing, including shape accuracy, stroke order and direction, pen lifts, and letter placement within the line system. They can also use a replay function, allowing them to watch their handwriting animation and compare it with a dynamic model to better understand mistakes. Motivation is reinforced through personalised audio encouragements (recorded by the teacher) and a simple reward system using stars, which supports engagement and persistence.

Crucially, Kaligo leverages the benefits of digital learning to reduce barriers: the digital eraser helps build confidence, as mistakes can be corrected without leaving a permanent trace. This encourages experimentation, reduces anxiety, and supports a trial-and-improvement approach that is particularly beneficial for learners struggling with handwriting.

Kaligo is also built with a strong focus on inclusive design and accessibility, aligned with current best practices in educational technology. Teachers can personalise the learning environment in real time, adapting settings such as line types (single line, double line, or UK handwriting guidelines such as baseline/x-height guides), background and letter colours, line thickness, spacing, and visual supports. Optional tracing overlays (faded or dotted models) can be enabled to scaffold learning and gradually build independence. The system is supported by a powerful teacher dashboard, giving educators full visibility and control over learning pathways. Teachers can create classes, assign targeted activities, and monitor progress in real time. The platform also provides ready-to-use teaching resources, supporting lesson planning and intervention work, particularly in SEN and inclusive classroom settings.

Overall, Kaligo offers a whole-school approach to foundational skills: it supports students with handwriting difficulties while also strengthening the progression of mainstream learners through structured, engaging and adaptive practice. It helps teachers build fluency, confidence and independence in writing, with measurable impact both on screen and on paper.
